Lip Fillers

The American psychologist Abraham Maslow, who suggested that people are motivated by their own needs rather than external factors, identified five basic needs that are interrelated in a certain hierarchy, namely physical, safety, social, esteem/respect and self-actualization needs (Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs).

In fact, Maslow identified two other basic needs, namely cognitive and aesthetic needs. However, these two needs were evaluated by later scholars within the scope of the need for self-actualization, which is at the top of the hierarchical needs.

The need for self-actualization is the desire to develop and prove one’s own characteristics and abilities. In fact, it is the answer to the questions “What is it that you want to accomplish and achieve in life? What makes you who you are?”.

Although there are different desires and goals that motivate each person to meet the need for self-actualization, the desire to be beautiful and to look beautiful is a basic desire that every person has, although at different levels. People who are born with a beautiful face and body, and the environmental and economic opportunities to make this beauty visible, are lucky at this point and start life one step ahead. Today, however, there are many solutions for people who are not born beautiful or who have lost their beauty.

The key to looking beautiful is facial beauty. A beautiful face is a whole formed by form, proportion and colors that come together in a correct, meaningful, balanced and harmonious way. One of the most important structures that affect facial beauty in terms of form and proportion is undoubtedly the lips. Especially together with the tip of the nose and the chin, they form the focal point of the face and contribute significantly to the formation of facial balance and facial symmetry.

Some of the people have natural, well-shaped, full, beautiful looking lips that are in harmony with the face from birth, while others have thin and misshapen lips, small or large lips in proportion to the face. However, those with beautiful lips may also face thinning and deformity problems over time or for some reasons. However, thanks to aesthetic applications that have progressed in parallel with the developing technology, it has become quite simple and safe to have the desired full and aesthetic lip structure. Especially with the Lip Filler application, which is performed in order to add volume and plumping to thin lips, to clarify lip lines and to ensure the aesthetic proportion between the lips, the deformed lip structure has ceased to be a problem. The important thing now is to decide what kind of lip you want to have.

Although the concept of beauty is relative and varies from person to person, there are some generally accepted criteria for a lip to be considered beautiful:

When the face is viewed from the front, the lower lip is twice as thick as the upper lip,
(In women) when the face is viewed from the side, the upper lip is 2 mm. behind the lower lip,
The lips are behind the tip of the nose and the tip of the chin,
The total volume of the lips should be compatible and proportional to the entire face, and the surface area should not be more than one-third of the lower part of the face,
Complete lip contour,
When laughing, the gums are too full to be seen and the fullness is more in the middle of the lips,
The upper lip fold/line (eros arc) and the margins of the space in the upper middle of the upper lip (philtrum) are prominent.
How is Lip Augmentation Done?
Lip augmentation is a painless intervention that should be performed by experts in the field and experienced in subcutaneous filling applications. First of all, the application plan is made by considering the patient’s complaints and demands.

Pregnant women, breastfeeding babies, those using blood thinners and those with chronic skin problems should inform their doctor before the application.

Before the application, the area to be filled is marked and local anesthesia is performed with the help of anesthetic gel and cream. Then, with the help of fine-tipped needles, the filling material is injected into the planned area.

Hyaluronic Acid (HA) and its derivatives, a compound found naturally in our body and used in many cosmetic products, are frequently used in lip fillers. This molecular compound, which can hold almost 1000 times its own weight in water, keeps the moisture needed by the skin in balance. This substance is generally preferred because it is found in the body’s natural structure, moisturizes the skin, provides cellular regeneration and is very unlikely to cause allergies or other side effects.

Another method used is the injection of rich fat (autologous fat) prepared from the patient’s own body and stem cells. Since the tissue used is the patient’s own, it is natural and does not show allergic effects, there is no incompatibility, and there is no transmission of any disease. Since the transferred tissue is living tissue, the filling effect is high. Its cost is low and it can be repeated. However, it is not preferred much because fat removal requires a separate intervention.

Unlike these two fillers, artificially produced substances such as Restylan, Calcium Hydroxylapatite, Biodegradable Polymer and collagen are also used in filling applications. It is important that the fillers used are products approved by the Ministry of Health.

Lip augmentation is completed in maximum half an hour and the patient continues his/her normal life. The desired image is formed in about a week. During this period, mild redness and swelling may be seen temporarily in the injection area.

Nothing should be eaten or drunk for at least two hours after the application. In the first week, extremely hot environments and very hot baths should be avoided and foods containing vitamin E should be avoided.

The effect of lip augmentation is temporary and lasts between 6 and 12 months. When desired, it can be applied again. The fillers used disappear spontaneously when their effect life in the skin ends. Therefore, they do not leave a permanent effect.

In people with very thin lips, sudden thickening of the lips may cause some problems. In these people, it is more appropriate to perform the application gradually with different sessions over several months.
